Yes, you read that correctly: a republican congresswoman is fighting for transgender rights, and it’s all because of her son.
Florida rep Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is currently squaring off against her fellow party members who hope to enforce a “bathroom” bill in North Carolina. She recently told The New York Times,
“Allowing students to use the bathroom of their authentic selves is a step forward in stopping the stigma around transgender individuals. Unnecessary laws only make transgender youth feel unaccepted, and can lead to depression or even worse, suicide.”
Unlike many parents of transgender individuals, Rep. Ros-Lehtinen was immediately supportive of her son. She even filmed a PSA with her son in which they came out publicly about her family.
“Our son is transgender. We loved him as Amanda and now as Rodrigo.”
This is so beautiful!
As for her son Rodrigo, he’s gone on to manage donor services for GLAAD and is activist for transgender rights.
“I’ve been very fortunate that I come from a loving home. My parents were always very clear with my siblings and I that their love was unconditional,” he said.
Rep. Ros-Lehtinen is giving us major hope that the parties can work together to protect transgender rights.
