Shonda Rhimes is not feeling the word diversity.
In a panel on the under-representation of women in the media, Shonda talked about how ticked off she gets when anyone suggests to her that she hire a writer or staff member who is “diverse.”
“A person is not diverse… Color of skin is not what makes people diverse. The best thing you can do is to not make someone the only one in the room.”
And while Shonda has been lauded for doing just that, maintaining diversity both on and off screen, she’s not convinced that she should be celebrated for creating a show “that looks like the world looks.”
“I don’t understand why that’s revolutionary.”
