60,000 IUDs Were Donated to Puerto Rico, and Yet Nobody Has Access to Them

In the wake of Zika, thousands of IUDs and birth control pill packs were donated to Puerto Rico, and yet not a single citizen has benefited. So what’s going on?

Distributed by the CDC, the organization says that unfortunately before they can distribute any supplies they’ll need to raise $20 million to properly train physicians to insert the IUDs and prescribe the pills, according to The Cut.

This is an especially time-sensitive issue as the prevalent Zika virus had the potential to cause the birth defect microcephaly and women need the ability to control their pregnancy planning.

So when will women finally be able to benefit from these donations? Unfortunately the CDC has only raised $1.7 million this far. In the meantime, thousands of IUDs and birth control pills will sit on the shelf.
