‘SNL’ Cecily Strong on Putting Up With Abusive Men in the Theater World

She may be an SNL champ now, but comedian Cecily Strong had to put up with a lot of bullsh– along her career — and a lot of it had to do with the fact that she was a woman.

At the recent panel “Gender Equality is No Laughing Matter,” Cecily recounted the time she had no choice but to put up with a crazy abusive guy in the theater, or risk losing her job.

“One of the guys was so nasty and really abusive and really mean. He punched a hole in a wall, and got into a fist fight with an old person.”

She admitted that’s one of the main reasons women in acting often feel they have no voice when it comes to gender disparities.

“Women are afraid to speak out because you get fired, you leave.”
