Feminist Porn Director Erika Lust on How She’s Changing the Industry, One Porno At A Time

When it comes to female-positive porn, Erika Lust is the woman to beat. Based in Barcelona, the indie film maker is working to make the porn industry more inclusive, and most importantly, way more female-friendly.

Speaking to PAPER magazine, she explained how she got her start.

“I wanted to watch some explicit movies—porn!—but I didn’t like anything I found. I didn’t like the style of it, I didn’t like the way they were treating women, but I still had this urge to watch something. So I explored, to see if it was even possible to do something different.”

Now, more than a decade later, Erika is successfully running xconfessions.com. Her film The Good Girl won first place at the Erotic Film Festival Barcelona and she most recently started Lust Cinema, a place on the internet to feature alternative porn (and we’re not just talking the kinky stuff).

“So many people said, ‘No, this is the way porn is, don’t bother. It’s just not really for you.’ And I thought, ‘Why can’t it be for me?!'””

Erika takes pride in her work, and as well as in the coworkers she surrounds herself with.

“My film crew is ninety percent women, and I think that’s important, because we really haven’t had the chance to describe sex on screen. There is really a difference when I have a camera person who is a woman, because she’s interested in showing female pleasure and in showing sex from her perspective.”

Today, Erika’s sight xconfessions.com has more than 900,000 viewers each month. You can learn more about Erika and her work on her professional website here.
